Nathan Adrian earns chance to defend Olympic gold in 100m freestyle

OMAHA (AP) — Missy Franklin has missed out on another event that was part of her Olympic program four years ago. Katie Ledecky could add another to her growing program.

Franklin was the 11th-fastest qualifier in the semifinals of the 100-meter freestyle at the U.S. swimming trials Thursday night, missing a spot in Friday’s final. Abbey Weitzeil was the top qualifier at 53.57 seconds, and Ledecky advanced as the seventh seed at 54.04.

The top eight will swim in the final.

Also advancing were 19-year-old Simone Manuel (53.
