RIO DE JANEIRO — After what she's called the most disappointing athletic performance of her life, Missy Franklin plans to change her scenery.
The six-time Olympic medalist had moved home to Colorado after two years competing collegiately at Cal to train with her age group coach, Todd Schmitz, in the lead-up to the Rio Games, hoping to recapture some of the magic she had in London.
But that magic could not be found. Here in Rio, the 21-year-old failed to qualify for the finals of her two individual events, the 200-meter freestyle and 200 backstroke. Her gold medal came as part of the 4x200 freestyle relay, though even that was not as joyous as it sounds.
