OMAHA — One night after Missy Franklin declared that she not only wanted to make the Rio Olympic team, but that she needed to make the Rio Olympic team, she did just that.
Franklin swam a gritty 200-meter freestyle race at the U.S. Olympic trials, finishing second to freestyle phenom Katie Ledecky, and securing her spot on the U.S. roster.
Franklin, a five-time Olympic medalist, had struggled early in the week and missed an opportunity to defend her gold medal in the 100 back, finishing seventh in the event Tuesday night.
