Mike Teunissen, the unheralded Dutch rider who won the Tour de France opening stage Saturday, kept the yellow jersey as his squad, Jumbo-Visma, won Sunday’s team time trial.
Defending champion Geraint Thomas was in line to take the yellow jersey until Jumbo-Visma, the last team to start the 17-mile second stage, crossed the finish in Brussels.
Jumbo-Visma beat Ineos by an unofficial 20 seconds, extending Teunissen’s four-second lead from the first stage.
Thomas, who last year became the first Welshman to win the Grand Tour, needed to make up a 10-second deficit on Teunissen because the Dutchman received a time bonus for Saturday’s victory.
