Mikaela Shiffrin bagged her fourth World Cup slalom season title before she even left the gate in Saturday’s race in Squaw Valley, Calif., on Saturday.
Shiffrin’s closest rival, Slovakian Veronika Velez Zuzulova, fell in her first of two runs, which eliminated her already slim chances of overtaking Shiffrin in the season standings by next week’s World Cup Finals.
Shiffrin went right after Velez Zuzulova and posted the second-fastest time, .02 behind Swiss Wendy Holdener, with lower-ranked skiers still to go.
The second run is at 4 p.m. ET, live on NBCSN, NBCSports.
