Michael Phelps swam his longest race since the 2012 Olympics, making a rare appearance in the 400m freestyle at the third day of the Pro Swim Series at Mesa, Ariz., on Friday.
Phelps clocked 4:02.67 to finish fourth in his preliminary heat and 17th overall, which would put him in a consolation final if he chooses to swim Friday night. The finals session is at 9 ET on Universal Sports.
Phelps last swam that long of a race at the London Games in the 400m individual medley. He last swam a 400m freestyle at the 2009 Santa Clara Grand Prix, when he clocked 3:48.
