Mayor Martin J. Walsh of Boston said he would not sign a document making city taxpayers liable for cost overruns related to the 2024 Summer Olympics, even if that decision meant the end of the bid. His announcement added to the chaos surrounding the bid since it was announced in January.
Mayor Walsh accused the United States Olympic Committee of pressing him to sign the document.
“Even though we’re only a few months in, I’m being asked to sign a guarantee,” Mr. Walsh said. “This is a commitment that I cannot make.
“This is me letting the taxpayers of Boston know where we stand on the Olympic bid, and let them know we will not sign a document that puts the taxpayers on the hook for one penny of overruns,” he said.
