Maria Sharapova lost in the first round at Wimbledon for the first time in 14 appearances, ousted by a Russian qualifier on Tuesday.
No. 132 Vitalia Diatchenko beat the 2004 Wimbledon champion 6-7 (3), 7-6 (3), 6-4, with the three-hour match ending past 9 p.m. local time at the All England Club.
Sharapova played Wimbledon for the first time since 2015, missing the Grand Slam tournament the last two years due to a doping ban and thigh injury.
While the 24th seed Sharapova was the biggest name to lose in the first round, a record seven top-10 seeds between the men’s and women’s draws were upset, most in Grand Slam history.
