Los Angeles’ deep Olympic history was evident as USOC and local officials and distinguished athletes gathered in Santa Monica to announce the 2024 Olympic bid on Tuesday.
The crowd included Olympic gold medalists in boxing, diving, gymnastics, swimming, track and field and water polo, all of whom had ties to Southern California.
Los Angeles is one of two U.S. cities to host multiple Olympics, along with Lake Placid, N.Y., which held the 1932 and 1980 Winter Games.
L.A. hosted the 1932 and 1984 Summer Games, a tradition that’s also celebrated. On Tuesday evening, a flame burned brightly at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum, which was the Olympic Stadium in 1932 and 1984, in celebration of the 2024 announcement.
