Lindsey Vonn, Mikaela Shiffrin in medal position for 2018 Winter Olympics Alpine combined

PYEONGCHANG, South Korea -- Lindsey Vonn and Mikaela Shiffrin are in medal contention in the Alpine combined after Thursday morning's downhill run.

Vonn, a downhill specialist, leads the field with a time of 1:39.37. Shiffrin, the best slalom racer in the world, is in sixth, about two seconds behind her fellow American.

But that may not be too much for Shiffrin to overcome Thursday afternoon in the slalom portion. She leads the slalom World Cup standings and won gold in Sochi four years ago in that event.

But, she failed to medal in the event here, and after skipping the Super-G and downhill because of weather delays, the Olympics feels like a disappointment for a skier who inspired talk of winning five medals, most golds.
