COLLEGE PARK, Md. — Katie Ledecky set an American short-course record in the 1,000-yard freestyle Sunday.
The 18-year-old Olympic champion won the girls 1,000 final in 8:59.65 at the Nation's Capital Invitational at the University of Maryland. She shattered the record by more than 10 seconds, which was held by Katie Hoff (9:10.77 set in 2007).
Ledecky also holds the American short-course records in the 500 free and 1,650 free
Earlier in the four-day meet, she won the 400 individual medley, 200 free and 500 free at the meet near her hometown of Bethesda, Md.. The meet, which she has swum since she was a child, is run by her club, Nation's Capital Swim Club.
