Kayla Harrison, the first U.S. Olympic judo champion, was upset in the round of 16 as the top seed in her weight class at the World Judo Championships in Astana, Kazakhstan, on Friday.
Harrison entered the competition having earned a medal at every Olympics and World Championships she entered since her first Worlds medal in 2010 (gold).
In Astana, Harrison was beaten by South Korea’s Hyun-ji Yoon, who then lost in the quarterfinals. Harrison’s biggest rival, 2014 World champion Mayra Aguiar of Brazil, also lost in the round of 16.
