Great Britain’s Joseph Clarke zipped through the course in 88.53 to take gold in the kayak K1 final at the Rio Olympics on Wednesday.
After placing third in the semifinal, the stage at which American Michal Smolen departed the event, Clarke surged to win.
Slovakia’s Peter Kauzer finished second, just .17 behind Clarke, while the Czech Republic’s Jiri Prskavec nabbed bronze.
The medal is Great Britain’s first gold in K-1, and its first of any kind since back-to-back silvers in 2000-2004 (Paul Ratcliffe and Campbell Walsh)
