Katie Ledecky advances to 100m freestyle final, Missy Franklin does not

Katie Ledecky advanced to the 100m freestyle final with her swim Thursday in the semifinals at the U.S. Olympic Trials. Missy Franklin, however, did not.

Simone Manuel, 19, won the first semifinal race in 53.64 seconds. Amanda Weir was second, Ledecky third and Allison Schmitt fourth.

Abbey Weitzeil took the second semifinal in 53.57, with Dana Vollmer second, Lia Neal third and Kelsi Worrell fourth. Franklin was fifth in 54.24, which was 11th and not good enough for the eight-woman final.

Ledecky finished seventh overall, but she may end up scratching from this event. It is not one of her specialties, but she could still be eligible for the 4x100m relay in Rio even if she scratches.
