KANSAS CITY — Karen Chen held on to become one of the unlikelist U.S. figure skating champions, topping three-time U.S. champion Ashley Wagner on Saturday night.
Chen, 17, was the short program leader and stayed on her feet without major jumping errors in her free skate Saturday, despite some questionable landings. She totaled 214.22 points.
Wagner was second with 211.78 points. She erred on her final jump, singling a toe loop, and had a triple toe loop called underrotated.
Mariah Bell was third, followed by 2010 Olympian Mirai Nagasu.
