Jenny Simpson topped American record holder Shannon Rowbury to win the women’s 1500m final at the U.S. Track and Field Trials on Sunday night and earn her spot on Team USA in Rio. Simpson, a 2011 Worlds champion in the event, finished in 4:04.74 to best Rowbury’s 4:05.39. Rowbury broke the American record in the 1500m last year with a time of 3:56.29.
The United States has never won an Olympic medal in the women’s 1500m, and although both Simpson and Rowbury have a chance to do so in Rio, Ethiopian Genzebe Dibaba will head to Brazil as the favorite after breaking the world record (3:50.
