RIO DE JANEIRO — Elaine Thompson won the women’s 100 meters at the Rio Olympics on Saturday, foiling her countrywoman Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce’s bid for a third straight title, and earning the unofficial title of Fastest Woman in the World.
Thompson seized the lead in the race quickly and never let up, winning in 10.71 seconds.
Tori Bowie of the United States took the silver and Fraser-Pryce the bronze.
The field had an unusually large number of contenders for gold.
Fraser-Pryce, 29, won gold in the 100 at both the 2008 and 2012 Summer Games. Heading to Rio, though, she was not seen as invincible as in past years.
