After taking bronze in the men’s omnium at last year’s UCI Track Cycling World Championships, Italy’s Elia Viviani took gold in the event Monday afternoon.
Viviani finished with a total of 207 points for the competition, with Great Britain’s Mark Cavendish taking second on 194 points, recovering from a crash during the race to take gold. Cavendish, who left the Tour de France early to focus on his preparations for Rio, beat out Denmark’s Lasse Norman Hansen for silver by just two points. A winner of 30 Tour de France stages in his storied cycling career, Cavendish now has his first Olympic medal.
