Hungary’s Katinka Hosszu, having already won a gold medal in the 400 meter individual medley, was pegged by many as the favorite to win gold in the 100 meter backstroke Monday night. Hosszu came through on that promise, winning the race with a time of 58.45 seconds.
Hosszu’s time was three tenths of a second better than that of Kathleen Baker, with the American taking the silver with a time of 58.75 seconds. Appearing in her first Olympic Games Baker, who will be a sophomore at Cal, has her first medal after finishing second in the 100 back at the U.
