House report exposes structural failures within U.S. Olympic Committee

A new report from a House subcommittee investigating sexual abuse in the Olympic movement finds the U.S. Olympic Committee and the national governing bodies it oversees have inconsistently applied policies and been slow to take action despite broad knowledge of abuse complaints.

The report criticized a culture in the movement that focuses on reputation and the USOC’s long-held lack of belief that it has authority over the NGBs, which “contributed to a systemic failure” to protect athletes.

The House Energy and Commerce Committee provided its majority report to USA TODAY in advance of its release on Thursday.
