AKRON, Ohio (AP) — Hideki Matsuyama of Japan said Sunday he is pulling out of the Olympics because of the Zika virus.
Matsuyama told Japanese reporters after his final round of the Bridgestone Invitational that he decided not to play. He later issued a statement through his management company that he cannot put his health at risk.
Matsuyama, a two-time winner on the PGA Tour, is the seventh player from the top 25 in the world who has turned down spots in Rio this summer. Of the 11 golfers who have chosen not to play, seven cited the Zika virus.
