Laurie Hernandez beat Simone Biles on the balance beam, but that wasn’t enough for gold in Rio on Monday.
Biles opened the door for the rest of the field with an uncharactertistic wobble on the beam. Going third overall, her 14.733 slotted her top with five gymnasts remaining in the event.
It took exactly one gymnast to pass her, as Netherlands’ Sanne Wevers posted a 15.466. That would stand, as the Dutchwoman took gold.
Laurie Hernandez was next, and the American squeezed in between Wevers and Biles with a relatively strong — though not optimal — 15.
