NEWARK, N.J. — Gabby Douglas has already won an American Cup, at least unofficially. And, more importantly, in the eyes of USA Gymnastics national team coordinator Martha Karolyi.
Now, the reigning Olympic all-around gold medalist would like to add an official win to her resume. Douglas and American teammate Maggie Nichols will compete at the American Cup at the Prudential Center here on Saturday.
It’s the first international competition of the year for the U.S. women, and success here can help propel gymnasts in the lead up to the Olympics.
It did that for Douglas, whose score in the 2012 competition didn’t count because she was an alternate.
