The heavyweight divisions of the judo competition came to a conclusion Friday, and when the dust settled France had itself two gold medalists.
In the women’s heavyweight competition Emilie Andeol defeated Cuba’s Idalys Ortiz by ippon just over three minutes into the golden score period to win France’s first-ever Olympic gold medal in that division. Ortiz, who won gold in London four years ago, falls just short of her goal of repeating as Olympic champion in the event. Ortiz has now won a medal in each of the last three Summer Olympics, as she took bronze in Beijing in 2008.
