Everything you need to know about triathlon

Welcome to a special Olympic edition of FTW Explains, where we break down the Olympic sports you are curious about, but don’t really understand. We won’t judge. Today we have triathlon.

The basics of the triathlon at the Olympics aren’t too different from what that really in-shape woman in accounting does — just at a much higher level. Triathletes swim 1,500 meters in open water at Copacabana Beach, bike 40 km (just under 25 miles) on bicycles light enough to carry over your shoulder and finish it with a 10K (6.2 miles) run. Medals will be awarded for men’s and women’s triathlon.
