Emma Coburn is officially headed to Rio.
Coburn was the favorite heading into the finals for the 3000m steeplechase at the U.S. Olympic Trials Thursday night and she didn’t disappoint.
She finished with a time of 9:17.48, coming in first. In fact, she broke the American record on the same track at the Prefontaine Classic on May 28th with a time of 9:10.76 when she finished third.
Coburn was ninth at the 2012 Olympics and fifth at the 2015 world championships.
The U.S. has never won an Olympic or world women’s steeplechase medal, though it has only been contested since 2005.
