Emma Coburn, who made history as the first American ever to win a world title in the steeplechase, was named the winner of the Jackie Joyner-Kersee Award, USA Track and Field announced Monday.
Also announced was that Sam Kendricks, who had an undefeated season in the pole vault, has won the Jesse Owens Award.
Coburn won the steeplechase at the IAAF World Championships in London, taking the lead on the final lap, with a time of 9:02:58, which was a championship as well as an American record.
She became the first American to win the steeplechase sine Horace Ashenfelter in 1952.
