Eliud Kipchoge of Kenya has set new marathon mark but did not break two-hour barrier during a Nike event in Italy on Saturday.
Kipchoge ran the race in 2:00:24 in a controlled environment, eclipsing the previous marathon mark of 2:02:57 set by Kenyan Dennis Kimetto at the 2014 Berlin Marathon. However, Kipchoge's time will not be recognized as an official world record, so Kimetto still holds that distinction.
Supported by a Nike effort that for months has sought to best control the variables that can impact performance, the Breaking2 athletes made their attempt without spectators in 17.
