Dressage rider quit mid-event to protect horse

Adelinde Cornelissen bowed out of the Olympics mid-event to protect her horse, who had fallen ill.

In a Facebook post, the Dutch rider said her horse Parzival fell ill on Tuesday after he was bitten by some sort of insect. She and the veterinarians treated him and then on Wednesday morning did a brief test ride where the horse looked fine, but his temperature was still low. Facing the choice of letting her team down or seeing how her horse would do, once a vet gave Parzival a green light, the two decided to give it a go in competition.
