Having already taken gold in the women’s flyweight and lightweight freestyle wrestling competitions, Japan made it a clean sweep of Wednesday’s gold medal matches with by winning the welterweight division.
Sara Dosho took gold with a win over Russia’s Natalya Vorobiyeva, the reigning welterweight world champion, in the gold medal match. Dosho is the first Olympic gold medalist in the welterweight division, which was just added ahead of the Rio Olympics. Eri Tosaka and Kaori Icho took gold in their respective weight classes, flyweight and lightweight, earlier Wednesday.
And of the 15 gold medals awarded in women’s wrestling since it was added for the 2004 Summer Olympics, Japan has won ten of them.
