Dazzling Free Skate Lifts Yuzuru Hanyu to World Title

HELSINKI, Finland — The Olympic champion Yuzuru Hanyu of Japan overcame a huge 10.66-point deficit on Saturday to end Javier Fernández’s two-year reign at the World Figure Skating Championships.

A much-discussed revolution by the next generation of men’s figure skaters was thwarted on the final day of competition as the quad-jumping powerhouses Nathan Chen of the United States, Shoma Uno of Japan and Jin Boyang of China came up short in their efforts to overthrow the skating establishment.

Uno won the silver and Jin completed an Asian sweep of the medals in the final world championships before next year’s Winter Games in Pyeongchang, South Korea, but they could not match the grace and precision that Hanyu brought to the ice.
