There wasn’t much American luck in the men’s road race in Rio on Wednesday.
The slick track cost Brent Bookwalter a uniform shirt and any chances at a medal, as the USA cyclist finished 23rd after starting 24th.
That’s nothing compared to the disappointment suffered by medal hopeful Taylor Phinney, who dropped from the sixth seed to a 22nd place finish.
The gold medal winner finished five minutes ahead of both Americans, as Switzerland cyclist Fabian Cancellara blazed a 1:12:52.42 to claim top honors.
Netherlands’ Tom Dumoulin finished second, and Britain’s Christopher Froome managed bronze.
