Cuba won its second boxing gold medal of the day, as Arlen Lopez won the gold medal bout in the middleweight division by unanimous decision.
The scorecards were close by all in favor of Lopez in his win over Bektemir Melikuziev of Uzbekistan, winning 30-27 on one card and 29-28 on the other two. Lopez, who took gold at both the AIBA World Championships and Pan-American Games last year, entered the tournament as the favorite to take gold.
Of Cuba’s five gold medals in Rio three have been won by boxers, with Julio Cesar La Cruz winning the light heavyweight division and Robeisy Ramirez taking gold at bantamweight.
