Swimming coach Bob Bowman said it felt "bittersweet" when 19-year-old Kristof Milak of Hungary broke Olympic legend Michael Phelps' world record in the 200-meter butterfly at the world championships on Wednesday.
Bowman, Phelps' longtime coach for 23 Olympic gold medals, said he was most impressed with the last 100 meters of Milak's race. The record-shattering time of 1:50.73 shaved off .78 seconds from Phelps' 2009 World Championships time (1:51.51). Bowman also saw shades of Phelps in Milak's stroke and form.
"No. 1, I love seeing next-level swims," Bowman told USA TODAY Sports on Thursday. "Because it changes the paradigm of the 200 fly.
