BAGNERES-DE-LUCHON, France (AP) — Defending champion Chris Froome won the eighth stage of the Tour de France with a daring downhill attack and claimed the yellow jersey on Saturday.
Froome led at the top of the final climb of the day, the Col de Peyresourde, and attacked again when least expected.
Crouched on top of his handlebars for extra aerodynamics, he opened a 20-second lead and used his time trial qualities to post a sixth career stage win in the Tour.
Froome's Team Sky displayed its impressive collective strength throughout the four major ascents, preventing his main rivals from trying their luck in hot temperatures.
