Chris Froome went off the road and crashed with about three miles left of the first stage of the Tour de France, won minutes later by Colombian Fernando Gaviria in his Tour debut.
Gaviria edged world champion Peter Sagan in a sprint to cap a 125-mile stage on the Atlantic Coast of France. Froome trails by 51 seconds after crossing the finish line with the back of his white Team Sky jersey appearing to have grass stains.
The 23-year-old Gaviria became the first cyclist to win his Tour de France debut stage (excluding disqualifications) since Swiss Fabian Cancellara in 2004, according to Gracenote.
