The American athlete Edwin Moses, 59, won gold medals in the 400-meter hurdles at the 1976 and 1984 Olympics. He beat his own 1977 world record in Milan in 1980, but missed the 1980 Moscow Olympics, which were boycotted by the United States. From 1977 to 1987, Moses won 122 consecutive races and set the world record in his event four times. He has also been an innovative reformer in Olympic eligibility and drug testing. In 2000, he was elected the first chairman of the Laureus World Sports Academy, an international service organization designed to promote and increase participation in sports at every level and to promote the use of sports as a tool for social change.
