The irony was not lost on Steven Holcomb. Bemused, he and a doping control officer watched a story on NBC Nightly News about Russian doping during the Sochi Olympics, one for which he’d been interviewed, while he was taking a drug test.
The timing was poignant considering the U.S. bobsledder was one directly affected by doping allegations brought to light in a New York Times report on Thursday. Russian Alexander Zubkov had won gold in two-man and four-man bobsled events during the 2014 Olympics in his country but was one of many Russian athletes alleged by a former Russian anti-doping official to have been cheating during the Games.
