Baseball, softball submit Olympic proposal for Tokyo 2020

The World Baseball Softball Confederation (WBSC) submitted its official proposal to add men’s baseball and women’s softball for the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, it said Thursday.

The WBSC said Tokyo 2020 organizers will announce a short list of sports that could be added for the Olympics on June 22.

Sports can be added for Tokyo 2020 due to the International Olympic Committee’s Agenda 2020 reforms. A host city can propose sports to be added.

“The WBSC is hoping to highlight that adding baseball and softball to the 2020 Games in Japan – where the bat-and-ball sport is embedded in the society across both genders – will serve to optimise fan, youth and overall engagement, helping to captivate the entire Olympic host nation of Japan and audiences worldwide,” the WBSC said in a press release.
