Armour: Life after Martha Karolyi looms for U.S. women

SAN JOSE — Martha Karolyi is everywhere, observing everything and missing nothing.

One minute she’s watching Gabby Douglas on uneven bars, her head tilted to the side and her eyes narrowed. The next she’s at vault, reassuring herself that Simone Biles can still fly. Then it’s over to balance beam, where she gives an approving nod to Aly Raisman.

Even when the gymnasts can’t see her, they know she sees them.

“I always know where she is,” Raisman said. “I think all the girls do that. We’re all like, 'OK, she’s here. She’s here.’

“Like I knew she was right next to me right now,” Raisman said, tipping her head ever so slightly in Karolyi’s direction.
