Annie O’Shea wins first World Cup skeleton race

Annie O’Shea became the first American to win a World Cup skeleton race in nearly two years, notching her first victory in Lake Placid, N.Y., on Friday.

“It’s definitely surreal,” O’Shea, a 28-year-old New York state native, told media in Lake Placid. “I felt like my sled did all the work, and I was just laying there.”

O’Shea, whose only previous World Cup medal was a silver on Dec. 10, 2011, won by .09 of a second over Switzerland’s Marina Gilardoni.

Olympic champion Lizzy Yarnold of Great Britain is not competing this season.
