COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (AP) — Gritting her teeth in pain, and wobbling ever so slightly aboard her sleek time trial bike, Evelyn Stevens kept churning her legs even as the clock hit one hour and she could finally let up.
Just call it a victory lap.
The American rider shattered the hour record, one of cycling's most revered marks, by riding just under 30 miles (47.98 kilometers) inside the Olympic Training Center Velodrome on Saturday. Stevens covered more than 143 laps on the 333-meter track, easily surpassing the 46.833 kilometers Bridie O'Donnell went last month.
"I worked a lot on the mental prep for this," Stevens said.
