Alpine World Cup race canceled due to winds

Mikaela Shiffrin goes into the Christmas break as the World Cup overall leader after the last pre-holiday race in Courchevel, France, was canceled due to strong winds Tuesday.

Shiffrin and defending World Cup overall champion Lara Gut of Switzerland, who are separated by five points in this season’s standings, were among the first 19 racers who took a first run in a giant slalom before the race was called off.

Shiffrin was in 10th place.

A replacement race for the Courchevel giant slalom has not been named.

The next scheduled races are a giant slalom and slalom in Semmering, Austria, on Dec.
