SAINT-LO, France (AP) — A gastronomical, sporting and cultural glance at Saturday's opening stage of the Tour de France:
Region: Normandy, La Manche (a green, leafy and hilly region alongside the English Channel)
Baguette and butter: Mark Cavendish claimed his first yellow jersey after winning a sprint in the crash-marred 188-kilometer opening stage that finished on Utah Beach, where Allied troops landed on D-Day in 1944. It was Cavendish's 27th stage win in the race. Two-time Tour winner Alberto Contador crashed midway through the stage and several riders were involved in an ugly high-speed crash on the final straight.
