For the second straight day, Old Dominion couldn’t cling to a 2-0 lead against Conference USA baseball power Rice.
But unlike Saturday when the Owls’ comeback was quick, Sunday’s rally came late in Rice’s 8-2 victory at Reckling Park in Houston.
Rice (14-9, 5-1) scored four runs in the seventh inning and three in the eighth to sweep the three-game series, dropping Old Dominion to 18-7 and 3-3.
Connor Myers hit an RBI single and Zach Rutherford (Western Branch) followed with a run-scoring groundout to account for the Monarchs’ runs in the third inning.
The Owls scored two of their four runs in the seventh on an error and Grayson Lewis’ two-run homer capped the three-run eighth.
