Old Dominion redshirt freshman Emilio Saavedra defeated Northern Iowa’s Josh Alber 4-2 in overtime Wednesday night to become the Monarchs’ second Midlands Championship winner.
Saavedra, seeded 13th, scored a takedown 18 seconds into the second sudden victory OT in the 133-pound final. Alber was the 18th seed.
The Monarchs finished seventh in the 38-team tournament with 63.5 points, and four Monarchs placed in the top eight in their respective weight classes.
ODU’s Alexander Richardson finished fourth after falling 3-1 in OT in a 149-pound semifinal match against former NCAA champion and second-ranked Jason Tsirtsis of Northwestern.
