ODU's Rutherford a finalist for nation's best shortstop

Old Dominion junior shortstop Zach Rutherford has made the finalist list for the Brooks Wallace Award, given to the nation's top shortstop, the College Baseball Foundation announced Wednesday.

The Western Branch High graduate hit .332 with 25 doubles, two home runs and 56 RBIs this season and was named first-team All-Conference USA. His 25 doubles ranks third nationally going into the NCAA tournament.

Rutherford has been one of the nation's most sure-handed shortstops, posting a .982 fielding percentage, an ODU best for a shortstop. He was the C-USA Defensive Player of the Year and led the conference with 196 assists, 28 more than any other player.
