Jennie Simms scored 18 points and Destinee Young had a double-double with 13 points and 11 rebounds Sunday, leading Old Dominion past Charlotte 71-59 at Halton Arena in the Conference USA opener for both.
ODU jumped to a 10-2 lead and never trailed. A layup by Charlotte’s Kenya Olley made it 16-14 with 2:18 to play in the first quarter, but the Lady Monarchs answered with an 8-2 run for a 24-16 edge. They shot 60 percent in the period, and remained hot in the second quarter, finishing the half at 56.7 percent and taking a 39-32 lead.
