ODU baseball team improves to 10-2

Kellam High grad Kurt Sinnen led off the eighth inning with a solo homer Wednesday to help Old Dominion to a 3-1 non-conference baseball victory over Virginia Commonwealth, the Monarchs’ 10th victory in 12 games this season.

Zach Rutherford (Western Branch) and Nick Lustrino had two hits apiece for the Monarchs. Rutherford and Nick Walker (Kellam) added RBIs.

Grassfield alum Brett Smith (1-0), the first of five ODU pitchers, got the win. He pitched 4.2 scoreless innings, allowing four hits while striking out three and walking one. Nick Hartman pitched the final two innings, allowing Darian Carpenter’s solo homer, to get his third save of the season.
