NORFOLK, Va. - Old Dominion University Athletics has partnered with Sentara Healthcare to provide incoming student-athletes with EKG and EchoCardiogram tests.
The program, spearheaded by Sentara cardiologist George Sarris, M.D., is currently being implemented for incoming student-athletes from all sports at Old Dominion.
"Although rare, the sudden death of an athlete is both shocking and tragic and increases the awareness of the need to identify those student-athletes who may be at risk for sudden cardiac death. There is evidence that with proper screening, like what we are providing to ODU student-athletes, some forms of sudden cardiac death in athletes can be prevented," said George Sarris, M.
